Rachael Bale

Rachael Bale is an investigative reporter at National Geographic, reporting on wildlife crime and exploitation for the series Wildlife Watch and for National Geographic magazine. Wildlife Watch is dedicated to shining a light on the commercial-scale exploitation of wildlife, identifying weaknesses in national and international efforts to protect wildlife, and empowering institutions and individuals working for a better world. She covers everything from poaching and wildlife trafficking to exotic pets, zoos and circuses, and trophy hunting. Previously, she was on the environment beat at the Center for Investigative Reporting. She has also worked for KQED, San Francisco’s public radio station, and for the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit investigative newsroom. Rachael has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Reed College and a master’s degree in journalism from American University.
